Magnolia cordata

FlowerFull smooth hydrangea is a brand-new cultivar of North America's native Hydrangea arborescens, and it was bred with one big goal: super strong stems that actually hold those big rounded white flower heads upright instead of letting them flop all over the place after rain or wind. It's a low-maintenance shrub that plays nicely with other shrubs in a foundation planting or works beautifully as a backdrop for perennials. It blooms in summer and is happy in full sun or part shade.

Botanical name: Hydrangea arborescens 'Baiful'

Origin: Hydrangea arborescens is native to the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, where it grows in woods and along stream banks. The FlowerFull cultivar was specifically bred for stronger stems and better disease resistance, and it hit the garden market in 2025 from Bailey Nurseries under their First Editions brand.

Flowers: Small white florets gather into large, dense, rounded heads starting in midsummer. As they age, the flowers shift to greenish and then brown in autumn, but they stay attractive alongside later bloomers, ornamental grasses, and shrubs with colorful fall foliage. Like other smooth hydrangeas, the flowers open from buds formed on the current year's new growth.

Foliage: Broad and roughly heart-shaped — similar to bigleaf hydrangea (H. macrophylla) — in a deep, rich green. What really sets FlowerFull apart is how exceptionally healthy the foliage stays; it sidesteps the leaf diseases like powdery mildew that can plague other smooth hydrangeas in late summer, staying clean and green right into autumn.

Size and habit: This is a nicely rounded deciduous shrub that reaches three to four feet tall and four to five feet wide — a good, substantial presence without being overwhelming.

Growing FlowerFull hydrangea

Exposure: Full sun to part shade

How to grow it: Plant in full sun to part shade — afternoon shade is especially helpful if you're dealing with hot Southern summers. Like other hydrangeas, FlowerFull appreciates regular watering and soil that doesn't dry out. Consistent moisture is extra important if it's in full sun. The best time to cut back smooth hydrangea is early spring, before new growth starts — this won't affect the summer flowers since they open from buds on the new growth. Cut the oldest stems back by about half to two-thirds their length, and leave a few younger stems intact to maintain good structure. FlowerFull smooth hydrangea is hardy in USDA Zones 3–8.
